Blenheim region
From Picton It is south on route one and within a half hour you will be in the number one wine region in New Zealand – the Marlborough Wine region . For the wine lovers this is the place. The wine makers here posted very high internationally with the wines from this region so it is a good idea to have a drive around or get a wine tour bus. Many of the wineries also provide top quality restaurants.
Before you get into Blenheim, a good size service town for the area where you can get what you may need for supplies, to begin your wine tour turn right at Spring Creek on Rapaura Road, the road marked as the turn off right to Nelson. If you like chocolate (and who doesn’t) down the road on the left is the Makana Chocolate factory…….good start…..then I recommend stopping next on the right at Jane Hunter’s winery. Taste her award winning offerings and pick up a vineyard map so you can begin your tour.
Some of my favourites are Allen Scott, Domain Georges Michel, Highfield Estate and Wither Hills. Doing the trip around the vineyards you end up in Blenheim from the south or if you are perhaps heading for the West Coast the turnoff of route 63 is at Renwick to route 6.
There is also a really exciting display of vintage aircraft at Omaka. I am not much of a history or airplane buff but I was astounded by what they have done here. The rare memorabilia is worthy of any national collection and ranges from beautifully crafted ‘trench art’ through to personal items belonging to the famous Red Baron himself. Right here in Blenheim!
