Catlins
Coming for Invercargill take the road east into the Catlins area. If the weather is good it is best you get off the main road and go down the side roads to the ocean and visit places like Niagara (good café) and Curio Bay in order to see fur seals, sea lions and penguins along the Catlins coast…….. visit the Jurassic fossilized forest at Curio Bay.
The Catlins is an isolated and interesting spot in New Zealand well worth the time to drive through. Here you will see what the strong winds have done to the trees that have bent to the severity and are almost horizontal to the land.
Here is a great map provided by the Whistling Frog Café .
A side road out of Pounewea takes you to one of our favourite camps and owners at Newhaven where just a short walk along the beach is a seal colony you can get close to (but not too close as they are fast). I love to walk down the beach to the seal colony and watch their antics.
Newhaven Holiday Park offers a range of new, modern accommodation on the Catlins Coast at beautiful Surat Bay.
Just 5km from Owaka, Surat Bay is the home to many sea lions, sea birds and native birds all of which can be viewed in their natural environment. Newhaven Holiday Park provides beach access to Surat Bay where an excellent beach walk can be made to adjoining Cannibal Bay.
Other tourist attractions on the Catlins Coast such as spectacular waterfalls, Cathedral Caves, Jack’s Blowhole, bush walks, penguin viewing, horse treks, golf course and canoeing are just a short drive away.
Newhaven Holiday Park has beautiful sea views and is set amongst inspiring scenery in a quiet, peaceful environment.
