The City of Auckland New Zealand

Some of you will be heading north for the beginning of your trip and others may wish to go into the downtown area of the city before leaving. Since David's flight was a day late I took the opportunity to go downtown and take a few photos so I could briefly give you an idea of what you could do to enjoy Auckland city.

It is a bustling downtown area as the major metropolis of a country but in terms of large city in the rest of the world it is quite easy to get around. From the airport go out to route one or as called the Southern Motorway and head north. There is also a regular bus connection along with the fleet of taxis at the airport to take you the 20 kilometers. If you drive go to the Hobson Street exit and stay on that all the way to the waterfront and Quay Street, At the end of Hobson turn left into the Viaduct car park on the left behind the Maritime Museum. From here you can walk everywhere you need to go. If you are comfortable driving it is a perfect spot to park a camper van

While right there at the parking lot I had the opportunity to visit the Museum. so I went inside and took a host of photos of the ships and history that relates to the beginning of New Zealand from the Maori arrival to the beginning with the early sealers and whalers plus the many ships devoted to shipping the timber taken from the vast forests that covered the majority of the country.

After the Museum I walked along the waterfront taking photos of the many cafes and restaurants available a few steps along plus the activities such as sailing on an America's Cup boat and other water related boating opportunities.

Then a short walk along are the ferries that go out to Waiheke Island, Great Barrier island and across the bay to the town of Devonport. Also the free bus is there to take everyone over to the Kelly Tarlton Underwater World display.

Walk the first block up to the main Queen Street where you can catch the Free Red Bus or a bus to anywhere in the city including the airport. A further walk along and you enter the shopping world of downtown Auckland and the many and varied cafes and restaurants all in walking distance of a host of accommodations. Just a couple of blocks is the Sky Tower and the Casino. You can go bungy jump off the Tower or site quietly enjoying a fantastic meal in the revolving top overlooking the city.

So after a cup of coffee here at the waterfront cafe on Queen Street I am off back to the B&B so I can maybe get a little sleep in order to be at the airport to pick up David at 5:45am......then we can get over to the camper van terminal and pick up our maui camper. I am really looking forward to being able to drive one. I know it is far superior to my old bus I traveled around in for so many years. I had a good look around the terminal yesterday and was really impressed with the efficiency of the place. They obviously take excellent care of their equipment.

So keep tuned in and I will take you through the paces and explain to you what is required for you to pick up
your vacation home on wheels................
